A major barrier to employment that many SSA beneficiaries have is the fear of losing their Social Security cash or health benefit. This session is designed to give you knowledge and tools to counter the misconceptions many individuals have about Social Security benefits and to promote positive employment outcomes. When Social Security beneficiaries go back to work, they often are unaware that they may not be entitled to their SSA cash payment until they get notification from SSA stating that they owe money back. A discussion about common reasons why overpayment happens, pointers to prevent overpayments, knowledge about specific work incentives that can help reduce or eliminate overpayments and specific steps to take with beneficiaries who have overpayments will be discussed. Tips for self-advocacy when interacting with SSA and a description of the differences between the SSI and SSDI programs will also be highlighted.
